Hi guys, WELCOME BACK TO THE FRAY!!!
It will be good to get back into the normal rhythm of life! I know that there is a bit of a “work-load” switch between first year and second year, due to the relative exam schedule for this Spring, so class dynamics will change a bit. If you can’t come to class, DO PAY ATTENTION TO THE BLOG!!! Much of the material you will NEED to take the exams is available here. Remember, with me you will have to do LANGUAGE exams – which means you will have to PRACTICE!!!!
Learning a language is not like learning something theoretical. Even if we talk about many theoretical things, and we will continue to do so, what we are really doing practising spoken interaction! It’s like going to the gym or getting fit. You have to do it a bit at a time, but constantly!!! I know full well that your class schedule does not favour language learning, and you have many language lessons concentrated in a couple of days, but life is almost never perfect and it is up to you to make the best of the situation by PRACTISING YOUR SKILLS on your own. Listen to music, grab an American and talk to him or her, or a German, French or any other person who speaks the languages you are trying to learn! Talk to yourself! There is no shame in that! Sing in the foreign language!
REMEMBER: You are here to study. The advantage of studying a language is that not all of it happens in grammar books! You cannot learn a language from one man in a jacket with a stick and a power point presentation. You MUST take any opportunity you can to speak, listen, READ, and write!!!! My old German Prof. Dr. Schwarz used to tell me “jeder tag lesen fuer sprachlernen”. Read everyday to learn a language.
In fact this is true, simply because reading is the most accessible form of linguistic interaction. It is portable and convenient. Want material – we have 3 years of issues of the Economist at Via Oddi – just waiting for you to read them! Or YOU COULD GO TO THE LIBRARY in Palazzo Battiferri!!!! Don’t know where the library is? I will take you there myself if I have to!!!! The more you read in your chosen foreign languages the better correct grammatical structures will become familiar, even second nature to you.
Then – GET OUT THERE AND TALK!!!! If any of you like, I can pair you up with American students – at least some of you! They need to learn better Italian, and YOU NEED TO LEARN ENGLISH!!!! YES – North Americans speak English!!! It’s the same language, with some variations on British English.
DO use the audio files I’ve uploaded!!! DO do the practice exams that are available!!! On week 16 (the 6th lesson week of this semester) we will have SIMULATION LISTENING EXAMS!!!! DO COME TO THESE!!!! They are very very useful in learning how to approach the exams.
Also, I have found a very interesting web site about inter-cultural communication. Take a look at it! There is a lot there to read and look at! It is:
Anyway – enough for now. I am really looking forward to seeing you all again!
SEMPRE AVANTI CLB!!!!!!!!!
